stubborn.

I have not blogged about this subject because quite frankly I’m embarrassed, and feel like somewhat of a failure in the mommy department regarding this issue.  With that being said, Irelynd’s third birthday is quickly approaching (late May), and she is not potty trained…at all.  It’s not that she doesn’t get it or she is confused about what to do…she just refuses to sit on the potty and go.  It’s really starting to frustrate me, but everyone keeps reassuring me, “she will do it when she is good and ready!”  Hmmm, after our conversation this afternoon, I’m not so sure about that.
This was the conversation we had this afternoon after Irelynd got home from preschool.
Me:  “Did you go pee-pee in the potty today?”
Irelynd: “No.”
Me: “Did Ainslie go pee-pee in the potty today?”
Irelynd: “Yes.”
Me: “Did Emma go pee-pee in the potty today?”
Irelynd: “Yes.”
Me: “Did Sabrina, Keira and Landry go pee-pee in the potty today?”
Irelynd: “Yes.”
Me: “So where did you go pee-pee?”
Irelynd: “I went pee-pee in my diaper and I LIKED it!!
Now do you see what kind of stubbornness I’m dealing with here?!

  1. I am dying here…so funny!! I can just picture her emphasizing the “I LIKED IT” part. I laughed out loud. Sorry for the frustration. I am not having any luck here with that either. I kinda let it go for awhile. There has got to be some kinda potty training book righ? You are one of the BEST mommies I know! :)

  2. OK, so Nate will be 21 in April but he too loved his diapers and was not interested in the potty. He also weighed about 40 pounds when he was almost 3 ( he is now 6’6″ and weighs 220, but I digress)
I was desperate to have him use the potty, the diapers were barely fitting and let’s face it , it was time …
At the time, we were planning a trip to Disneyland. Nate love Donald Duck and one day when I was checking the mail, I told him, ” Hey look Donald Duck sent us a letter from Disneyland” . I went on to explain to him that Donald wanted us to know the park had new rules that did not allow diapers …
3 days later Nate was completely potty trained and we all had a great time at the park. God Bless Donald Duck!

  4. Kari – I know you have no idea who I am . . . I’m Max’s preschool teacher and I found your blog from Jody’s. I don’t normal comment on blog’s of people I don’t know, but this is different because this sounds like the story I lived a few years ago. Very smart daughter, totally capable, but stubborn and completely uninterested in potty training. On the advice of our Ped. we stopped ALL discussions of potty training and within the week it was a done deal. Not potty training was her way of being in charge of the situation. Once she realized I didn’t care there was no power for her to fight for and it was a done deal. Hoping your little one gets it all straightened out soon . . . for your sake!

  5. Hi Kerry…nice to meet you! Thanks for the advice and encouragement. I think you’re right about letting her feel in charge of the situation. I will do my best to keep my mouth shut and see what happens. Thanks again!!

  6. ok– I have to share a Wes story, well its really not a story but just wanted to let you know that Wes was over three years old when he finally decided to use the potty. No form of humiliation worked and I tried what ever I could think of. Im guessing in due time she will change her mind. Though I do think the Disneyland trip sounds like fun. Maybe its a Lorenzen thing—-so how old was Jon?
