Stay-at-home mom

Transitioning from a career to stay-at-home mom has been harder than I originally thought. I love being home with Irelynd and watching her change from day to day, but I have to admit, there are days when I wish I were back in the workplace. I obviously miss the paychecks and the adult interaction, and at times I fear that I am flushing years of knowledge and education down the drain.  But as crazy as it may sound, I also miss using my brain and actually working!  Sitting in long, seemingly pointless meetings; or day long negotiations with neither side budging; putting together endless spreadsheets, and crunching numbers to find rates….. hard to believe, there are days when this all sounds somewhat appealing to me. At first I thought I must be sick or something; but after talking with several women who have also recently transitioned from the workplace to home, we all seem to share the same struggles and concerns.
Don’t get me wrong; the women I admire the most are, or have been, stay at home moms.  My mother chose to put her nursing career on hold for a few years to stay home with my brother and I.  My sister-in-laws, Jody and Kara, are two of the most incredible women in the world, with talents that could be used in any workplace; yet for the time being, they have chosen to devote their talents to shaping their children’s futures. My mother-in-law, Aunt Deborah…the list goes on.  In my eyes, it is the most important job a woman can have…not to mention challenging in so many ways. (I, in no way, mean to take away from the millions of women who juggle both…I’ve been there, and I have great admiration for women who choose to work and have a family).
In my mind, it truly is a catch-22…the desire to be successful in a career vs. the desire to raise children. I could go on and on about the inequality and hardships of being a woman in the 21st century, but to spare you all, I will step down off my soapbox and wrap this up! :-)
Bottom line: I know I have been blessed with this wonderful opportunity to stay at home and raise Irelynd, and despite my above rattlings, I wouldn’t change it for the world!
